House of Pizza and Calzones
132 Union Street
Brooklyn, NY 11231
718-624-9107
Newly refurbished with a little garden in the back, the storefront itself looks a bit nicer than it used to and it’s a good stop off with the kids after a frolic in Mother Cabrini park. We’re a huge fan of the plain, Neopolitan pizza, which has the thicker, chewy crust and a sauce that’s packed with a deep, tomato flavor. But if you like the thinner crust variety, some of the specialty pies will do you right. Grandma’s Pizza, a favorite of other House of Pizza fans we know, has that slim silhouette and includes garlic and basil in the sauce. A Deep-Dish is also on the list, though we haven’t tried it just yet. Though this old-school joint has been around for over 50 years and is known for its deep-fried calzones stuffed with ricotta cheese, mozzarella and ham, we’re cheerleaders of the plain old pies. Delivery is quick and other than a rainy Saturday night, the cheese is usually still gooey.
