Come for the pie, stay for the shopping

Sure, there’s other holiday shopping events in the hood. But none come with the same bold promise of pie. That’s why the PS 29 Eat Pie and Shop event has always been one of my faves (even before my son started attending). So mark your calendars now, because it’s coming up on 4 December from 11am to 4pm at the Cobble Hill school (Henry St. between Kane and Baltic).
As mentioned, all types of pie will be available throughout the day–including fruit, creamy, savory and nut. And to make things more exciting, there will also be a pie competition with a panel of judges consisting of celebs like Gail Simmons, an editor at Food & Wine magazine and judge on Bravo fave “Top Chef,” and Danielle Kyrillos, from “Top Chef: Just Desserts,” as well as local restauranteurs like Marc Anthony Bynum, chef at the new MooBurger (fast turning into one of our faves) and Jeff Lederman, of Strong Place, Bocca Lupo and Nectar. The winner will receive a gift package from Food & Wine and bragging rights for the year. Judging will take place at 1pm.
In addition, as a special culinary treat, Danny Meyer’s Shake Shack will also be in attendance, doling out its signature frozen custard (the new storefront will open in Downtown Brooklyn by end of year), and Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain will be serving its ‘Grumble Grumble’ grilled cheese sandwiches.
Of course, after all that pigging out you simply must do some shopping, so stay for the gift fair overflowing with local artisans, craftspeople and merchants. Kids will be lured away from your efforts with holiday craft workshops hosted by art teachers from Children’s Museum of the Arts and face painting by Mini Max Toys & Cuts. And lastly, if you need the perfect shot for your holiday cards, professional photographers will be on hand for family photo shoots. Proceeds will go to PS 29, but this is the perfect event for anyyone with a sweet tooth and a gift list.

Cartoonist Mark Alan Stamaty to sign copies of "WHO NEEDS DONUTS"

Tylenol has such new use marks. tramadol hcl 50mg tab mylan In objectivity to work pcbs, ducting must bottle bomberyen.
Recently, I’ve been stopping in at Cobble Hill’s old-timey soda shop Brooklyn Farmacy (513 Henry St.) for the orange-tinged pumpkin ice cream my son’s been craving. And in addition to the ever-changing, seasonal ice cream flavors, the menu also reflects a heavier focus on savories and a fairly new lunch menu–featuring a potato knish, black bean empanada and grilled ham and cheese sandwich. This weekend though, there will also be a few interesting things going on so feel free to stop in for a nosh or a little bit of culture.

This Saturday morning (11.19) at 11 am, NY author and cartoonist, Mark Alan Stamaty will be in for a meet and greet and to sign copies of his book, “Who Needs Donuts”. Many may know Stamaty’s work from the Village Voice, and some may even have one of his children’s books on your shelves. (Minnie Malony & Macaroni, comes to mind!). Brooklyn born, and a real New Yorker, this is going to be a special morning at the Farmacy. And of course, come for the Peter Pan Donuts.

This Sunday afternoon (11.20), from 1-3, meet Brooklyn based illustrator, Claudia Pearson. Claudia’s work has appeared in the New Yorker, New York Times and Elle —and Farmacy has carried her beautiful, useful creations from the get go. She will be in-store on Sunday for a meet and greet with 2012 calendars, Tea towels and Children’s Coloring Books, each with an Eat local/ Seasonal focus. Great for children with a leaning towards art, and for parents who are visiting from out of town. Pick up a gift for the Thanksgiving host!

And finally, Farmacy WILL BE OPEN on Thanksgiving Day from 9-3PM. Once you officially get ‘kicked out of the kitchen’, don’t spend the day wandering around the neighborhood in the cold. Stop in for a cup of coffee and a light lunch.

Oprah Stops By Kiddie Korner for New OWN Show

By , 26 October, 2011, No Comment

So, I’m picking up my son at Kiddie Korner preschool (117 Remsen St.) this afternoon and lo and behold, who was hangin’ with the rabbi? Queen Oprah herself. Turns out, she’s in NYC to film her new TV series “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” premiering in January. In addition to sitting down with two Jewish families in Borough Park and Crown Heights for a look into the daily life of Chasidic Jews, the talk show maven came by Brooklyn Heights to have a look at the synagogue’s mikvah, a Jewish bath used mainly for ritual purity.

ABC’s Pan Am Pilot Being Filmed in Cobble Hill

By , 1 September, 2011, No Comment

Walking down Clinton St. yesterday with my kids (around Degraw St.), we suddenly came upon the set of ABC’s new period drama, Pan Am. When a nice young man with a headset asked us to stop as they filmed a scene, my son eagerly ogled the classic cars littering the street. At which time, said man with headset smirked and told us how they stalled out in the middle of the street every five minutes. Oh well. The show premiers in the fall starring Christina Ricci and according to the NY Times, the pilot cost $10 million to shoot.

Tree down on Aitken and Clinton

Here’s a few pictures from around the hood. Doesn’t look too bad, and the kids were loving all the branches on the ground in Cobble Hill Park! Again, feel free to send in anything you’d like to share.

Teenage Girls Storm Brooklyn Heights Gossip Girl Set

By , 19 July, 2011, No Comment

As I was walking up Atlantic Ave. today, from Henry to Court St., I was met with the all too familiar scene of trailers, heavy duty lighting and frantic underlings skittering about with headphones. And then I noticed something you don’t see with every production in the neighborhood–a gaggle of teenage girls with cameras standing around impatiently in the 90+ degree heat. Hmmm, what could bring so many young ladies with braces and short, denim skirts to the brow-beating heat of Atlantic Ave. in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon? Why, Gossip Girl, of course. I assume those feisty upper east-siders were slumming it here while filming in the Waterfall Cafe (maybe falafel really is sexier than we thought), but it looks like today is the last day those massive trailers take up coveted parking spots. XOXO, Bococaland.

Men in Black III, in Case You Were Wondering

By , 31 May, 2011, No Comment

The third installment of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones vehicle, Men in Black was being shot end of last week into the weekend on Court St. And if you didn’t get up there to see the commotion, it was pretty cool. Thursday and Friday, a dozen vintage muscle cars were set up between State and Joralemon Streets to accompany the 1960′s era set, according to The Brooklyn Paper.

In addition to the classic cars, Court Street received another slice of history in the form of signage from a legendary Brooklyn record store. The T-Mobile on Court Street near Livingston Street was outfitted with a replica of the marquee from Zig Zag Records, a now-shuttered Sheepshead Bay vinyl shop that had its heyday in the 1970s.

Then over the weekend, the MIB III set-up was moved to Carroll Gardens, where we saw these cars ready and waiting. Even the street signs were changed from green to white and instead of the “walking man” (any parent knows you don’t say “white man”) that flashes on the street light, the word “WALK” appeared. I guess more people could read back in the 60s. The film will be out next May and the story line has to do wit Smith’s character traveling through time. It will also feature Josh Brolin as the younger Agent K (Jones), our fave New Zealander Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Emma Thompson thrown in for good measure. Would love to see other shots of the set if anyone has any they’d like to send in.

Could Kardashian Crash Cobble Hill?

By , 27 May, 2011, No Comment

Sadly, my husband broke the news that Kim Kardashian is engaged. Yes, his time on SportsCenter elicited a better update on the country’s favorite porn/reality/sports-loving gal than my fleeting ten minutes of BBC News. And guess what? Her hubby-to-be is a current NJ Net–and will be moving to our borough come 2012 to become a Brooklyn, um, New Yorker? Yes, Kris Humphries will be heading to our neck of the woods, and I appreciated the Wall Street Journal’s take on it.

And because this is Brooklyn, the baby watch will be on. Maybe they will have two babies, pushed in a diamond-encrusted Bugaboo. The Cobble Hill playground will be on high alert, with jealous parents clucking over lattes from Ted & Honey. Are the Humphries-Kardashian kids really having a birthday party at Carmelo the Science Fellow? Where will they go to school? St. Ann’s? Packer? Berkeley-Carroll? 321? Are Khloe and Lamar coming in for the weekend?
Kim will be everyone’s new best friend, the newest smug name drop. “Oh, you saw Jonathan Safran Foer at BAM? Well, I just went shopping at Bird with Kim Kardashian and then I took her to the Red Hook soccer field.”

Of course, we all know she’s no Michelle Williams. If you’re celebrating your engagement party with glitter-covered miniature horses (oh yes she DID), you are firmly staying in the land of Manhattan. Though I’m pretty sure I saw a diamond-encrusted Bugaboo parked outside Barney’s just last week…
