By , 3 May, 2012, No Comment

Mommys need wine. No, it’s a proven fact. After a long day of looking after the kiddies, many of us daydream about uncorking a bottle of vino. So thanks Donna Da Vine, for coming up with the genius da vine mamas, a monthly tasting group at their cute little shop at 355 Atlantic Ave. This from the website:

Being a mom of an adorable 3 yr old myself I understand the importance of having a glass or two of delicious wine at the end of a long day. To honor all of us who balance family…work and life in general i am holding monthly mom’s tastings. Join us as we walk through 5 or 6 of my favorite wines in the shop. Space is limited so please call to reserve your space early.
each tasting – $25 per person sign up for all 5 – $100

SCHEDULE:
thursday may 24th – 7 to 8:30pm
thursday june 21st – 7 to 8:30pm
thursday july 26th – 7 to 8:30pm

Fancy Candy Store to Open in Cobble Hill

By , 21 March, 2012, 1 Comment

Though it’s been in the works for quite a while, I finally spotted a sign up on the door of 254 Baltic St., between Court and Clinton. Right next to Families First, a non-profit community organization where younger kids go for classes and a super playspace, we can look forward to the opening of candy store and party space, Sugar Shop. Not sure how parents are going to feel about it’s proximity, but it sure does look pretty. There’s not much more info on when it will open or what it will look like inside (it’s website just says Coming Soon), but it’s Google header reads, “vintage, modern candy store, old world nostalgic, hard to find candy, local home grown candy, best birthday place for kids, new york, brooklyn.” Thinking it will be akin to Dewey’s Candy Shop down in DUMBO.

Brooklyn Wine Exchange Class on Cotes-du-Rhone: Tonight!

By , 29 February, 2012, No Comment

I know, I know, it’s totally last minute. But if you have some free time tonight, you may want to swing by Brooklyn Wine Exchange at 7pm for a class on our all-time fave corner of France, Cotes-du-Rhone. Between the stony terroir and a pleasurable mix of grapes (the fruit of Grenache, the spice and heft of Syrah, and the animal meatiness of Mourvedre), you cannot go wrong buying a bottle of this beloved wine. So come join Philip Cooper from Weygandt Wines for an enjoyable, and scholarly, tour through this happy, sunny region. You can call 718-855-WINE (9463) to sign up.

PS: it’s not just awesomely good, it won’t break the bank either.

PPS: Brooklyn Wine Exchange is also offering a crazy discount on a case of Rio Madre 100% Graciano Rioja. If you buy 12 bottles before Friday at midnight, it will cost you just $115.20 (20% off). Click here to take advantage.

Brooklyn Wine Exchange Talks Rioja Basics-TONIGHT

By , 25 January, 2012, No Comment

We’re still in the thick of red wine season and though we here tend towards simple Pinot Noirs and Cote du Rhones, there’s nothing wrong with a good Spanish Rioja. Just ask Patrick Watson, wine and cheese expert and owner of our favorite family-owned specialty shops in the hood. Though it’s a little last minute, you can still get in on his Rioja 101 class this evening at Brooklyn Wine Exchange, which will guide you through the geography, the grapes, and the great pleasures gained from this accessible and pleasing Spanish region. Starts at 7pm and you can sign up by calling 718-855-WINE (9463).

Heights Hebrew School Implements the…Karate System

By , 19 September, 2011, No Comment

As if starting one school isn’t hard enough, those of the Jewish faith also get to introduce Hebrew school to their kids already packed schedules. But if you want to try something a little different this year, come check out the Heights Hebrew School at 117 Remsen St. According to the folks over there, they are using the Aleph Bet with the Karate System which is a new, innovative, cutting edge reading system.
“Based on the martial arts motivational philosophy of color coded levels and testing, the Aleph Champion Program provides motivation and inspiration for students around the world. Easily attainable levels and professional materials make Aleph Champ an incredible success. The Hebrew alphabet as well as the vowels and word formations are divided into 10 colored levels and the students start out as ‘White Aleph Champs,’ working their way up the colors of the rainbow to be a ‘Black Aleph Champ.’ Parents and teachers alike are amazed by the results. Students are motivated and have clear goals defined for them. Monthly Aleph Champ Award Ceremonies offer more motivation and recognition for student achievement. Learning to read Hebrew has never been so much fun!”
I mean, why not? The class is on Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. For more info, call 347-362-3154 or email info@HeightsHebrewSchool.com

Hypnobirthing in Carroll Gardens: Why Not?

By , 12 August, 2011, 4 Comments

Ok, full disclosure here. When I went into labor, I got that epidural shot the moment it was humanly possible. I then read, slept and watched a little TV before that whole pushing thing started. But I do understand there are some of you who want to do this whole birthing thing naturally. And I commend you (though I really did love my drugs). So if you are looking to feel the whole experience au naturale, why not try the Hypnobirthing workshop at Carroll Garden’s Element Natural Healing Arts (518 Henry Street near Union). It will run every Tuesday evening, 23 August to 20 September from 8pm to 10pm, and promises to be as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress free birth. “You will learn how to call upon your body’s own natural relaxant and thus lessen, or even eliminate, discomfort and the need for medication. With HypnoBirthing, you will not be in a trance or a sleep state. You will be aware and fully in control, but profoundly relaxed.” You heard it here first ladies. For more info and to RSVP for the class please call Yael Quittner at (347)451-0876.
