Sadie’s Kitchen Comes to Cobble Hill

By , 30 August, 2011, 2 Comments

A new cafe, located at 243 Degraw St. (near Clinton St.), looks like it will be open to the public soon. The space, which in the past few years has gone from take-out darling Chicory to doomed Ultimate Burgers and Dogs, now has cheerful flower boxes lining its windows and Sadie’s Kitchen painted on a new, green awning. But unfortunately, that’s all I got for you folks. The rumor is, the address has no liquor license, so don’t expect a neighborhood drinks spot. Got any tips? Give me a yell at tobey@bococaland.com.

Tree down on Aitken and Clinton

Here’s a few pictures from around the hood. Doesn’t look too bad, and the kids were loving all the branches on the ground in Cobble Hill Park! Again, feel free to send in anything you’d like to share.

As reader Adrian wrote when he sent in this pic: I guess it's like Rahm Emanuel said:"You never want a serious crisis to go to waste." Right?

Forget Irene and Get Your Bourbon On

By , 28 August, 2011, No Comment

Getting a little tired of staring at newscasters on TV and heavily swaying tree branches out your window? At least one restaurant is open for business in Carroll Gardens today if you’re ready to head into the tail end of sweet Irene. Just got an email from the folks at Char No 4, on Smith St. between Baltic and Warren. The bar opened at 3pm for drinks and the restaurant will serve a full dinner menu starting at 6pm. This from Proprietor Sean: “Almost our entire staff lives close enough to be a short walk or bike ride away and we all look forward to serving anyone who wants to pay us a visit.”

Hurricane Update for Brooklyn

By , 26 August, 2011, No Comment

UPDATE: Brooklyn Bridge Park and Governer’s Island will close until further notice beginning noon tomorrow, Saturday 27 August.
Looking at the sunny skies this afternoon, it’s hard to believe an unprecedented storm is moving our way and may hit NYC this weekend. Yup, subways will be shut down tomorrow afternoon and Mayor Bloomberg has asked certain areas of the city to evacuate–like Battery Park City and Coney Island. Since the East River is close to many of our homes, it may also be a good idea to keep our eyes open. To be honest, I’ve never been so happy to have the BQE between myself and the waterfront.
Though we won’t know until we know, here’s a few tips from New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in terms of gathering supplies in case of electric and gas outages. Pleae feel free to let us know if you have any other ideas or information you’d like to share.
Keep enough supplies in your home to survive on your own, or shelter in place, for at least three days. If possible, keep these materials in an easily accessible, separate container or special cupboard. You should indicate to your household members that these supplies are for emergencies only. Check expiration dates of food and update your kits when you change your clock during daylight-saving times.
One gallon of drinking water per person per day
Non-perishable, ready-to-eat canned foods and manual can opener
First aid kit
Flashlight*
Battery-operated AM/FM radio and extra batteries (you can also buy wind-up radios that do not require batteries)
Whistle
Iodine tablets or one quart of unscented bleach (for disinfecting water ONLY if directed to do so by health officials) and eyedropper (for adding bleach to water)
Personal hygiene items: soap, feminine hygiene products, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.
Child care supplies or other special care items

Boerum Hill Boutique Hosts Big Kids Sale

By , 24 August, 2011, 1 Comment

If you haven’t stopped by Juniper Galaxy, a small, discounted boutique on Bond St. between Atlantic Ave. and State St., you’re totally missing out. The store, which features up-and-coming US and European designers, promises significantly lower prices due to wholesale purchasing–and won’t disappoint with a well-chosen selection of clothing and accessories from brands like Acrobat, Frock by Tracey Reese, MaxMara and Stephanie B.
However, if you’re beginning to concentrate on the wee ones in your family for back-to-school shopping, there’s still a reason to come in and browse. A childrenswear designer showcase will be held in the garden from 5pm to 8pm for a special presale on Thursday, 25 August. Get there early to meet the designers, enjoy a glass of wine and get the best picks of the sale–which will last until 28 August and will include kid’s designers: Bobinette, Saurette and Ses Petites Mains.

Please Comment Away

Hey readers. It’s been a long hot summer, and though we’ve been in and out with our blogging, we’re getting ready to gear up full-speed for the fall. One thing which recently caught my attention was a problem with our comment section. And after spending some time (a few hours) with a lovely woman from Yahoo customer service, I’m happy to report it’s up and running once again. So please feel free to comment away. And as we start getting the kids ready for school and our sweaters out of storage, I hope you’ll keep following us here at Bococaland and letting us know what you like, don’t like and what you’d like to see more of. Thanks again for sticking with us!

Red Hook Music Festival at Urban Meadow

By , 23 August, 2011, 1 Comment

All-you-can-eat hot dogs and live music sound like a good combo. Even better when it’s right in your backyard. Or, more succinctly, at the Urban Meadow on President between Columbia and Van Brunt St. So come on down this Sunday, 28 August, to the Red Hook Music Festival presented by Red Hook Star-Revue, and check out bands including The Middle Eight, Union and the Amanda Cole Quintet. Your $10 donation will include food and drink, but better hide that six pack, no booze allowed in this public park.

Hypnobirthing in Carroll Gardens: Why Not?

By , 12 August, 2011, 4 Comments

Ok, full disclosure here. When I went into labor, I got that epidural shot the moment it was humanly possible. I then read, slept and watched a little TV before that whole pushing thing started. But I do understand there are some of you who want to do this whole birthing thing naturally. And I commend you (though I really did love my drugs). So if you are looking to feel the whole experience au naturale, why not try the Hypnobirthing workshop at Carroll Garden’s Element Natural Healing Arts (518 Henry Street near Union). It will run every Tuesday evening, 23 August to 20 September from 8pm to 10pm, and promises to be as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress free birth. “You will learn how to call upon your body’s own natural relaxant and thus lessen, or even eliminate, discomfort and the need for medication. With HypnoBirthing, you will not be in a trance or a sleep state. You will be aware and fully in control, but profoundly relaxed.” You heard it here first ladies. For more info and to RSVP for the class please call Yael Quittner at (347)451-0876.
