A Few $ Savers Around Town

By , 19 January, 2010, No Comment

Just thought I’d share a few specials/sales I passed on Court Street today. Downtown Bar & Grill on Court and Amity St. is a fave of ours for family meals. A kid-friendly staff and menu permits us to come (and stay) for lunch and dinner–especially if there’s a game to be watched. Today I caught a sign outside the restaurant announcing a free soup with entree, wrap, sandwich or lunch special. Great for a weekday lunch with a group.
And just a block or two later, I passed Serene Rose at 200 Court Street and saw a big sign outside announcing Buy 1 Get 1 50% OFF of selected merchandise. I didn’t know this, but there’s also one on 5th Ave. in Park Slope. It ain’t cheap, but there’s some classic, tailored dresses I love to look at.

Man Hole Fire on Joralemon and Willow

By , 18 January, 2010, No Comment

Just a quick neighborhood update for you. Saw lots of firetrucks, police cars and credentialed journos over on Henry and Joralemon Streets today around 4pm. The officers told me there was a series of pretty bad manhole fires on Joralemon and Willow Street–but thankfully nobody was hurt.
And, according to the NY Post, there’s no 4 train service in both directions between Atlantic Avenue and Brooklyn bridge-City Hall. 5 trains are running on the 2 line between Nevins Street and the 149th Street-Grand Concourse in both directions.

Nu Hotel’s Growing Pains

By , 18 January, 2010, 1 Comment

Hip and boutique-y, the Nu Hotel has been an interesting addition to our neighborhood–which had formerly relied on the Brooklyn Marriott and various underground bed and breakfasts to house our family and friends when they came to town. But the prices aren’t exactly right (a room with two SINGLE beds costs a minimum of $200 a night) and as I’ve mentioned before, the Detention Center can add a noisy and unsightly element to anyone’s stay.
And now, according to the NY Post, there’s even more to moan about. The hotel is bringing a law suit to the hotel’s developers, Boymelgreen Developers, along with eight other architects, designers, engineers and contractors, involved in the hotel’s construction because of a malfunction of the heating and air conditioning systems. It claims there was $250,000 worth of damages over three incidents in 2008 and 2009.
Can’t say I’m pleased to hear it–we totally need new accommodations around here–but would somebody please build us a family-friendly, clean, middle-of-the road hotel so our guests don’t have to shell out a fortune to visit? Or pile up in a brownstone on air mattresses (come on, we’ve all been there). Anyone have any secrets to local hotels I don’t know about? If so, would love to hear about it.

New Bistro From Bocca Lupo Folks to Open in Feb

By , 17 January, 2010, 1 Comment

This tip comes from our friends at Eater, but we like the sound of it. Looks like the folks behind Bocca Lupo are working on opening a new American Bistro on Court Street. Will include a raw bar, over 20 beers on tap, outside seating and will hopefully open mid-February. Will try to verify asap, but keep your fingers crossed.

Children’s Tylenol Recall

By , 15 January, 2010, No Comment

Just saw this on AOL’s ParentDish blog. Looks like a former recall of Johnson & Johnson’s Tylenol now includes Children’s Tylenol and Motrin products. The recall covers caplets and geltabs sold in the United States, United Arab Emirates and Fiji–and this is the second time in less than a month that the company has had to announce one. Not exactly trust inspiring–but what options do we have when it comes to taking down fevers? Check here for recall info from the company.

Health Plans Trying to Terminate LICH Doctors

By , 15 January, 2010, No Comment

This is a particularly disturbing story I found at NY1. Seems United Healthcare and Oxford Health Plans are trying to terminate about 1000 doctors affiliated with Continuum Health Partners (which include St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, Beth Israel Medical Centers, Long Island College Hospital and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary)–just because their only attending privileges are at these hospitals. This would mean that a whole lot of people would have to go to a different hospital or pay more out of pocket.
As of now a state Supreme Court justice has blocked it and the court has ruled in favor of Continuum, but arbitration is pending and all is not over. We’ll try to keep you informed as this community relies on LICH and we’d all be unhappy to see this go through.

Waterfront Restaurant Being Pondered at Pier 6

By , 15 January, 2010, 1 Comment

Yup, looks like Bococa will have its very own version of the River Cafe. The New York Post has reported that the city’s Parks Department is looking to open a restaurant on Pier 6 overlooking the Harbor. They are asking for Request for Proposals to find someone willing to operate the eatery–which will have outdoor seating. Love the idea–anyone up for a challenge?

If you’ve had a birthday party somewhere cool and interesting lately–please either email or respond to this post.

Thanks and look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Papel Grand Opening Party

By , 15 January, 2010, 1 Comment

Papel New York, which we reported on in December, is having it’s Grand Opening party on Friday 22 January at 7:30 and is hoping everyone will come by for some wine, treats and good company. In addition to showcasing the work of local artist Soosan Joon, the upscale paper store has added several new lines of cards and stationary from other local designers and is taking suggestions and notes from customers for any new products you might like to see. Come in and check out designs from local artisans such as:

- Chick Print in Cobble Hill-fabulous cards, invites and announcements
- Backyard for Bongo in Brooklyn Heights-super funny & practical fill-in-the-blank cards (sort of like Mad Libs, but for adults)
- Krafteria in Ridgewood-beautiful note cards handmade with Swarovski crystals

And if you’re looking for personalized stationary or invites, the new Custom Design Studio is now open as well. The shop is meeting with new local artists all the time and hopes to add more to it roster. It also plans on displaying different canvased artwork on its walls every few months.

Clam Shuck for the Whole Family

By , 14 January, 2010, No Comment

The Brazen Head, at 228 Atlantic Ave across the street from the Y, is having a Winter Clam Shuck on Saturday 16 January. Little neck clams will be $4.00 1/2 dozen, Blue Point oysters $1.00 each and clam chowders $2.00 a Bowl. And to wash it down, Long Island beers will be just $5 a pint.
Sound good but not sure if you can bring the kids? Lou, Managing Partner of the Brazen Head, told Bococaland that though his establishment isn’t a restaurant and doesn’t have high chairs, you should feel free to come with the whole family. Shucking and food specials run from 5 to 10pm but drink specials are all day and all night.
