Serious Soccer Birthday Parties

By , 4 February, 2011, 1 Comment

We recently reported the opening of Upper 90, a super soccer store/facility on Atlantic Ave. between Bond and Hoyt. And in addition to the classes they offer on the 750-square-foot turfed and padded pitch, birthday parties have now been added to the roster. The Basic Package offers 90 minutes of fun, with 60 minutes of soccer, supervision by the coaching staff and Upper 90 Soccer + Sport water bottles. That’ll run you $20 a kid plus $100 flat fee. “Enhancements” include custom soccer jerseys: ($20/participant); mini-balls ($10/participant); pizza & beverages ($5/participant); piñata ($40); and soccer-themed party favors ($10/participant). Digging this idea, though we haven’t checked it out yet. Call them at (646) 863-3105 for more info–and let us know what you think if you’ve been by.

This free, first come, first serve event starts at 1pm and is located in the Dweck Center.

And I was whining yesterday about cleaning off my car. According to The Brooklyn Paper, the tennis bubble atop the New York Sports Club on Boerum Place near Dean Street collapsed Wednesday night and won’t be back up until after the weekend. Now that’s what I call a bad snow day.

Here We Go Again

Yes, yes, it’s beautiful. And the kids are super psyched to be home. But I, for one, am tired of this snow. Pros: don’t have to move the car, don’t have to get the kids out of the house by 8:30, can stay in pajamas for a few extra hours, can drink at least three extra cups of coffee before leaving house. Cons: can’t do anything I planned (this post will probably be the last bit of writing I’ll get done today), whining to begin approximately 1/2 hour after playing in the snow, have to dig car out while husband stuck in Atlanta (oh please LGA, get yourself sorted), over-caffeination inevitable. And am I imagining things, or did the weather say it’s going to dump down again tomorrow and Saturday? Anyhoo, have a good snow day and hope your pros are more than your cons. If you’re looking to take the kids sledding in the borough, here’s a link to all the best spots. Would love to see any pics you might take of the hood and the kids today so feel free to share.

Crepe Day is Coming

By , 25 January, 2011, 2 Comments

Chandeleur, Fête de la Lumière, or jour des crêpes is a French holiday celebrating the purification of the Virgin Mary and the presentation of baby Jesus–but in actuality, it gives us all a good reason to gorge on crepes. The tradition being that you keep a gold coin in your writing hand and you flip a crepe in the air with the other. Ctach the crepe in the pan and you’ll have prosperity for yourself and your family the rest of the year. Crafty. And though you may not get a chance to do the flipping, you can certainly enjoy the spoils at our Gallic treasure, Provence en Boite (263 Smith St.). Come on in on 1 February and enjoy crepes of all kinds: sugar, jam, chocolate or Grand Marnier. Bring the kids between 4pm and 6pm and you’ll get one free sugar crepe for children under 12 years old.

New Super Soccer Store on Atlantic Offers Classes

By , 21 January, 2011, 1 Comment

If anyone in your home is a soccer fiend, you may want to take a looksie at Upper 90–the new, giant store on Atlantic Ave between Bond and Hoyt. Though we missed the open house last night (with food by Mile End–DARN) the 3,500-square-foot space is packed with gear and apparel for player and fan of any age–as well as a 750 square-foot play area dubbed The New York Cosmos Field . Classes are being offered to kids aged 3 to 10 (though the winter session began this week) Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:45pm to 5pm and the website claims, “Classes incorporate exercises and games developed on the streets and fields of Brazil, which are proven to increase accuracy, skill, speed of play and comfort on the ball.” The space itself includes state-of-the-art field turf, padded walls, and a heritage mural depicting players such as Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto. The 10 week class will cost you $350 and you can get more info here . Or, call or email at (718) 643-0167; brooklyn@u90soccer.com.
