By , 1 March, 2010, No Comment

Just a quick reminder that according to the , NYC Department of Education pre-k applications for all NYC public schools are available online and at the schools tomorrow, though when I went in to PS 29 today to check–they told me they won’t have them until March 8. April 9 is the deadline to get them in.
Be sure to check our pre-k primer for any info you may be lacking. Good luck everyone.

Safer Cell Phone Use for Teens and Tweens

By , 23 February, 2010, 1 Comment

If you’ve got kids, you’ve got problems with cell phones. Phone calls, texting (dare I even say sexting?), mobile content, GPS labeling. There’s a lot out there and it’s hard to monitor it all, let alone keep up with the technology.
To help you make better decisions, kid-safe cell phone company Kajeet–which offers pay-as-you-go cell phones with a suite of online parental controls–has come out with a list of Free Guidelines for Teen and Tween Cell Phone Use, along with a sample cell phone contract for parents and their children. Here are some highlights:

1. Establish a contract covering all key rules of use before giving your child his or her first cell phone. Cover “who, where, and how much” cell phone use is appropriate.
2. Agree to put the cell phone in a central recharging area at night, in a powered down condition.
3. Discuss and reach agreement on the appropriate cell phone etiquette (including use of phones during meals, at restaurants, in public areas).
4. Discuss the appropriate use of picture messaging and the hazards of inappropriate use.
5. Get a firm commitment that the phone will not be used when driving. Discuss what your child should do if in a car with a driver that is texting.
6. Review the rules of cell phones at school, and reach agreement that all school rules regarding cell phone use will be followed.
7. Establish a budget and identify who will pay for use of the cell phone.
8. Review the consequences that will result if the agreed rules of use are not followed.

But you can find it all, starting tomorrow, at http://blog.kajeet.com/, along with a sample contract template that parents may download and tailor for their own family.

Montreal Bagels Take a Road Trip

By , 23 February, 2010, No Comment

We’ve already mentioned the mega-publicity hounded Montreal deli, Mile End, that opened in Boerum Hill a few weeks ago. And though your mouth may be watering for one of the tasty smoked meat sandwiches, there’s another star in the making. Namely, Montreal bagels, which owner Noah Bernamoff has been importing to NYC from his hometown on a weekly basis. But, as his business partners mentioned to us in a recent email, it was costing him a bit much to get them there by courier–and if a shipment were to arrive just a few hours late the bagels would lose a day of freshness. Add to that the higher prices he had to charge to make up for all this and things just weren’t working out the way they had hoped.
But have no fear, there will be Canadian bagels for everyone. The foodies decided to contact their favorite childhood bagel maker–the famous St-Viateur, located in the heart of Montreal’s Mile End district– and struck a deal with them to pick up fresh-out-of-the-oven bagels at midnight and drive them down personally to Brooklyn. This would make them fresher and cheaper. After a very successful trial run this past weekend, fresh St-Viateur bagels will now be available every Saturday morning at the deli, located at 97A Hoyt Street right near Atlantic Avenue.
Bagels are on sale by the unit, ½ dozen and dozen at the restaurant, but to guarantee availability we advise that people place orders in advance through their website (doing so will allow for a choice of variety and also save $2 per dozen).

Got some questions regarding life insurance? As we get older (and have more than just ourselves to look after) these things tend to loom larger than they did in our 20s. So come to Kiddie Korner preschool at 117 Remsen St. this Wednesday night and get some answers. The free educational seminar, called “The ABCs of Life Insurance,” addresses frequently asked questions like: How much do I need; Who is a beneficiary; and What is a taxable gain? Deborah Ehrenberg, MBA and Agent of NewYork Life Insurance Company, will be on hand from 6pm to 7pm. Feel free to give her a shout at dehrenberg@ft.newyorklife.com for any other questions you may have.

Just a quick reminder that this is the last weekend the “Sesame Street: A Celebration of 40 Years of Life on the Street” exhibit will be up at the Brooklyn Public Library on Grand Army Plaza. You may be too busy enjoying the above freezing temps out there, but if you’re interested, you’ll find animation cels, spripts, props and yes, even a few muppets. The final day is 21 February. Robberies Spike in Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Vinegar Hill and DUMBO

By , 20 February, 2010, No Comment

Not the best news I’ve had all day, but something for us all to be aware of. According to YourNabe, there’s been a 100% jump in robberies in the 84th precinct, which encompasses Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Vinegar Hill and DUMBO. 16 incidents were reported in a period of 28 days–with four apparently from one suspect, an African American man in his 40s with a scar on his face and gold front teeth. Supposedly, the man either displayed a gun, or claims to have a gun. He then proceeded to force the victims to withdraw money from an ATM — but has made sure to stay back just far enough so that he is not captured on a bank’s security camera.
The borough command is on the case and has deployed an extra 20 or so cops on foot patrol, according to Captain Vanessa Kight. Though I usually feel relatively safe (and am not out late as much as I once was), we should all try to be more vigilant in light of this info.

Vivienne Tam Butterfly Headphones

By , 19 February, 2010, No Comment

Yup, I know this has nothing much to do with Bococa, but thought I’d share with you the nifty, very pretty headphones I got to see yesterday at designer Vivienne Tam’s Soho showroom and store. The in-ear Butterfly headphones, which the Chinese-American designer collaborated on with Monster (maker of well-known headphones Beats by Dr. Dre) are delicate, beautiful and totally different than any gadget you’ve probably seen recently. Styled after her Spring 2010 Butterfly collection, they are embossed with a red butterfly on one ear and a blue butterfly on the other, and draped in a mellow, champagne gold (including the wires). This helps it look more like jewelry than technology (which we women tend to like).
The designer herself was gracious, smart and interesting, telling me about her love for gadgets and staying ahead of the curve with this partnership. Tam also was forthcoming on how her design process works, citing her need to be up to date on world happenings and politics (her Fall 2010 collection has a Chinese Zodiac theme, with an environmental twist). The headphones will be out in early April for $200 and will include a toggle that will let you answer and control your iPhone.

Hoping to Make Lemonade Out of Building Lemons

Tired of staring at the nasty fences, half-built construction and massive, stalled wrecking balls in our neighborhood? So is Councilmember Brad Lander of the 39th District. And to shine some light on these stopped and stalled construction sites (there are at least 10 in the Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Columbia Waterfront area alone) his office has created a website called Stalled Development in the 39th Council District. Here you’ll find all kids of goodies like project descriptions of certain sites, along with its status, a full background and even a map of where each one is located. Here’s what they say about their blog:

We need to make these sites into assets for the community. Many of these developments are causing real hazards for their neighbors, with fences falling down on sidewalks, loose construction debris that can become deadly in high winds, and unsecured sites that are dangerous for children and an invitation to squatting.
Help the effort to convert local blight to community benefit by providing feedback and tracking the progress of each site.
Leave comments below on a individual site to update us on the conditions. If you call 311 about an issue, please leave a complaint number in the comment.

Not a bad idea. Whether or not they’ll be able to actually do anything is another story. The plan is to hit the builders with a fine if they aren’t doing anything–that way, they’ll either sell the land for a workable price or start the work again. So check it out and start commenting–I’m so tired of that nasty blue fence in Court and Union!

Big Suprise: No School and Parking Rules Suspended!

By , 9 February, 2010, No Comment

Unless you’ve been hiding under a giant rock, you’ve probably heard we’re expecting a big storm tonight. About a foot of snow is being called for in the area, which has lead to the suspension of Alternate Side Parking regulations Citywide for Wednesday, February 10 to facilitate snow removal. However, parking meters will remain in effect throughout the City. Also, the board of education has notified the public that all their schools will be closed tomorrow. So, if your kids are in public school, better have some plans in place. Mine go to Kiddie Korner over on Remson St. and we were alerted today that they’d be closed as well. If you haven’t heard yet, you might want to check in with your school’s administrators and find out what they’re thinking. Have fun out there and stock up on hot chocolate now!
