Maurice Sendak Passes Away

By , 8 May, 2012, No Comment

Wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of one of Brooklyn’s most adored artists. Maurice Sendak, author and illustrator of beloved classics like Where the Wild Things Are, grew up in Bensonhurst and graduated Lafayette High School before going on to create his wildly popular works. This has been an especially tough few days, as another Brooklyn native, Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys also passed last Friday. No matter your age, everyone has a reason to feel a little sad this week.

NY Transit Museum Offers Kids Entertainment During Spring Break

By , 27 March, 2012, No Comment

Thinking about how to stay away from the crowds at the Museum of Natural History during spring break? Here’s one interesting option. The NY Transit Museum, here at Boerum Place & Schermerhorn St., will be showing an original mini-musical in its screening room at 11am and 1:30pm on Monday 10 April through Friday 13 April, and 1:30pm and 3:30pm Saturday 14 April and Sunday 15 April. “Sharin’ A Ride” hopes to connect the history of New York City’s mass transit with the themes of April’s Earth Day, making concepts like sustainability and reducing your carbon footprint tangible for kids. Part-musical, part-historical tale, the performance hopes to encourage children to be eco-friendly and make use of New York City’s transportation system. The show is free with Museum admission ($5/child, $7/adult).

After finding a romantic spot for drinks and dinner, the Valentine’s Day originality factor tends to be low. So why not try something a little more personal today? Head to Brooklyn Farmacy (513 Henry St.) with the kiddies or your mate of choice, and get your photo taken in the old-school soda shop. Burton Wells Photography will be hanging around all afternoon and will shoot a 5×7 black and white photo–which will be printed on the spot for your instant gratification. The cost is $15, but what’s a few bucks for a memory keepsake?
