Watty & Meg, courtesy burger blog A Hamburger Today

Brownstoner reports that the space at 548 Court St. (near 9th St.) will become a burger restaurant. This would be at least the fourth new burger place round our way; JB’s Burger on Smith (between Douglass and Degraw), Ultimate Burgers and Dogs on Degraw (at Clinton, in the former Chicory space) and the more stylish (or at least more expensive) Henry Public (Henry St. between Atlantic and Pacific, in a former TV repair store). There are certainly others. I’ve yet to try the burger at Watty & Meg, but my wife loved hers. And who cares if it’s a chain — Five Guys on Montague is always great.

My own favorite, alas, was Pit Stop — in summers past there was nothing like a Pit Stop burger, a glass of rosé, a few mosquitos, and the pleasant din of children throwing petanque balls at each other. But those days are over.

What’s your pick for the best burger in the neighborhood?

City Beaches Open for Biz

By , 27 May, 2010, No Comment

I’ll be the first to admit, I haven’t been to many of the city-owned beaches. Other than a trip to Coney Island (where I didn’t head into the water), I haven’t explored what NYC has to offer in terms of the surf set. But since the beaches officially open for business this weekend, I decided to look into it and found some great information here. Friends have given Jacob Riis Park glowing reviews as a clean, fun place for families, though I haven’t heard much about Orchard or Manhattan beaches. Have any input? We’d love to hear from you.

Congress Street Crumble Gets Court Order

About a month ago, we reported on the decrepit brownstone on Henry and Congress, owned by John Quadrozzi. Seems the city and Landmark Preservation Commission brought a lawsuit against the building owner to get his ass in gear and make the proper repairs to his home and neighboring carriage house. Yesterday, this came to fruition with an out-of-court agreement and, according to the NY Daily News, the properties must now be kept “in top condition.”

City officials want the buildings to resemble their original facades. After obtaining permits, Quadrozzi has 10 weeks to finish the first phase of work and six months for phase two. If he misses the deadlines, he faces fines of $1,000 a day.

Pretty hard core, but it will be interesting to see if he sticks to the schedule. I’ve gotten so used to seeing that scaffolding, I’ve forgotten it’s there–but I suspect his neighbors will be doing a jig over the settlement.

LICH Health Day

Long Island College Hospital is on a roll with community affairs. First they decide to deep clean the small playground on Amity and Henry, then they announce Health Day, which takes place on Saturday, 12 June, from 10am to noon at Henry Street Park (between Pacific and Amity). Come for free health screenings, CPR for kids demonstration, meet LICH physicians, tour the LICH Pediatric Emergency Room, clowns, face painting, light refreshments, and even a children’s sing-along with music by Audra Fox.

Welcome Cafe Ribant

By , 25 May, 2010, 3 Comments

Cafe Mei Mei, at 231 Court Street, has been a nice addition to the hood. Specializing in American cuisine, with an emphasis on regional and seasonal fare, we’ve enjoyed popping in for well-crafted meals and relaxed service. But here’s a quick update–the restaurant is now called Cafe Ribant after the owner/chef Robert Ribant. If you didn’t already know, the cafe was originally named after Ribant’s husky. But, according to the sign posted outside, copyright laws pertaining to another Cafe Mei Mei spurred the change of signage. So same great food, design and service–different name.

New Diner on Court

Danny’s, a new diner and take-out deli at 119 Court Street, takes over the space that was previously the unfortunate F. Martinella deli. Taking a quick walk in, I noticed tables in the the front and back with waitress service, as well as a breakfast and deli area for take-out. The take-out menu looks good–with hand-rolled bagels, appetizers (like a mozz, tomato and basil oil salad, and New Orleans crab cakes), a create-your-own-salad bar, sandwiches (The Red Hook has grilled skirt steak with lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onion and horseradish), burgers, pasta and even daily specials.
