By , 31 March, 2010, No Comment

Sorry to inundate with Norah, but looks like the sultry singer is ready to welcome Brooklyn with open arms. She’ll be performing at Bric Arts Celebrate Brooklyn! 2010 Opening Night Gala, which takes place on 9 June at the Prospect Park Bandshell. The gala will honor and present the Celebrate Brooklyn Award to two prominent women of Brooklyn and all proceeds will provide funds for free performing arts programming at the Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, which serves 250,000 New Yorkers each year.
The concert is the free part of the evening and starts at 8pm, but if you’d like to attend the entire night’s festivities–which includes cocktails and dinner, and an after-party with I Love Vinyl–you can purchase tickets starting at $325.

Verde on Smith Opens Next Week

By , 31 March, 2010, 2 Comments

Verde, a new Italian restaurant at 216 Smith Street, will open its doors for business on Monday 5 April. The eatery, which can be classified as Northern Italian with a Southern twist, will offer an upscale menu of completely organic products and high-end meat, fish and produce. If you’re looking for chicken parm, you’ll have to head elsewhere, because Dino Castri, the head chef at Verdi, promises only sophisticated, well-thought out dishes. His signature, Spaghetti Chitarra, will feature sea urchin and jumbo scallops tossed in a light, creamy sauce. Also expect items like sushi grade salmon and tuna as well as Kobe beef, pistachios imported from Sicily and produce from far-flung places like Japan. Verde will enjoy a full liquor license, so you’ll be able to sip some vino from the all-Italian wine list or relax with an Italian-themed cocktail at the bar or in the garden.

Come on in, the coffee’s fine. As we reported, 139 Atlantic the collective coffee spot on Atlantic Ave between Clinton and Henry finally opened its doors yesterday. Owner Taylor Mork is happily awaiting your order, so go on and say hello–and don’t forget to let us know what you think! Looks like a great space to linger over a latte.

Forget the Windows, Norah’s Getting a Pool!

By , 30 March, 2010, No Comment

We’re not going to talk about window-gate anymore. It’s done and truthfully I don’t think it looks so bad. But now, Norah is going for broke by adding a pool in her backyard. And I’m not talking about a cruddy above ground dealie-o. I’m talking about a fancy, in-ground pool with a hydraulic system. All this was reported by Brownstoner from the advice of a well-connected tipster. Does anyone else have serious Brownstone envy yet?

The Incredible, Edible Egg

By , 30 March, 2010, No Comment

It’s that time and if you want to bring your children somewhere to stomp around and elbow each other out of the way for Easter eggs and candy, head over to Pierrepont Playground for the annual egg hunt on Saturday at 10am. For something a little more educational, check out Unscrambling the Egg at the Audubon Center at the Boathouse (in Prospect Park) near the Lincoln Road/Ocean Avenue entrance at 1pm on Saturday. Kids will learn how to hold an egg so it’s impossible to break as well as which animal produces a three-pound egg, then use these egg-related skills for crafts, games, and exhibits.

It’s Raining-Pop Culture Time Out

By , 30 March, 2010, No Comment

Ok, it has nothing to do with Bococa let alone Brooklyn (I’m not even going to attempt to find a link) but it’s raining and I thought you’d all like to know–RICKY MARTIN IS GAY! Yup, the crooner with the everlasting six-pack has come out via Twitter, saying:

“I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”

According to ABCnews, Ricky said he decided to reveal the truth after working on his memoirs helped him realize he had to be free with himself, and not keep any more secrets. I know, I know, a total surprise, but we’re glad he’ll finally be able to live his own vida loca.

Wait, There are Tea-Partiers in Park Slope?

By , 30 March, 2010, 4 Comments

I’m not one to talk politics on this website, but caught this story in The Brooklyn Paper and thought I’d share. Seems an Obama-hater was strolling through Park Slope last Friday and decided to deface a bumper-stickered car by gluing an expletive-laden note to the door with tar. As you can see, the angry conservative doesn’t have the best grasp of spelling, but I think he got his ideas across loud and clear.

Ringling Brothers Coming to the BK

By , 30 March, 2010, 1 Comment

Who needs Madison Square Garden when we can catch Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus right here on our side of the river. Yup, the greatest show on earth is coming to Coney Island this summer, according to the Daily News.

“The Coney Island Boom-A-Ring” will run all summer on Thursdays, Fridays and the weekend until Sept. 7 and Mayor Bloomberg promised a “fantastic season for kids and families. Together with a host of attractions, the circus is one more reason to visit a neighborhood that offers exciting events, great food and 2.3 miles of boardwalk enjoyment for New Yorkers and visitors,” Bloomberg said.

The shows begin on 18 June though tickets will go on sale 30 April for a non-wallet-crushing $10 a ticket. The tent will be set up at the corner of Surf Ave and West 21st St. and you can get more info here.
