Finally Made it to Cafe Mei Mei

By , 31 December, 2009, No Comment

I’ve been eying up Cafe Mei Mei since they started putting it up–I love a new restaurant–but last night was the first time I’ve gotten in for a meal. After leaving Prime Meats because of a 45 minute wait, and being told Buttermilk Channel was an hour and a half, we decided to walk back to our hood and try this yellow-tinged storefront. So here’s my thoughts: suprisingly good food, but the atmosphere needs a make-over.

Starbucks Dad Gets Smack for Cranky Baby

By , 30 December, 2009, No Comment

Thank the Brooklyn Heights blog for this little tidbit. Seems a dad over at the Montague Street Starbucks was waiting for his overpriced coffee when another male patron complained about his cranky baby. The baby, in a stroller, was not to be shushed and said dad stood and waited for his purchase. This didn’t go over well with the complainer and in response, he slapped poor, un-caffeinated dadda on the back of his head. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? I’d laugh if I didn’t think I might get a huge slap myself next time I’m waiting for a latte. Police were called but the scroogy patron had already left the scene.

Rock n’ Roll Photos at Brooklyn Museum

By , 30 December, 2009, No Comment

Want to show the kids what rock & roll is all about? Bring them to the Who Shot Rock & Roll exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum, which runs until January 31, 2010. Billed as “the first major museum exhibition on rock and roll to put photographers in the foreground, acknowledging their creative and collaborative role in the history of rock music,” there are six sections for children and parents to ogle at–like rare behind-the-scene images, musicians shot at the beginning of their career, and conceptual images and album covers.
Bring a MP3 player or cell phone and download the free audio from iTunes to listen to the photographers tell their stories on the images. The suggested contribution is $10 and kids under 12 are free. For more info, check out http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/rock_and_roll/.

St. Ann’s Headmaster Makes a Move

St. Ann’s loss is Brooklyn Friends School’s gain. Dr. Larry Weiss, the Catholic school’s headmaster, will be moving to take over the same post at the Quaker school next summer.

LICH Playground Gets a Clean-Up

By , 30 December, 2009, No Comment

File this in the incredible but true folder: I actually saw two workers this morning cleaning up the red LICH playground on Henry and Amity. Now, I’m a big fan of this playground–it’s perfect for my 18 month old and my three and a half year old still enjoys it enough to keep him busy. But it’s no secret that the LICH playgrounds are not well taken care of. Every time I’m there I see garbage, the ground is always filthy and if you’ve been after any precipitation, you know all about the dirty water that comes up through the holes in the tiles. The worst part is seeing the daily clean-up crews at any of the city-owned playgrounds (I mean, it’s great for them!) and knowing that because the hospital owns this land we don’t get the same treatment.
I’m not sure if this means we’ll be getting a cleaner park in the future or if they’re just tidying after the snow, but we can only hope for the best.

Buttermilk Channel Offers Monday Night Special

Whether you’re a steadfast fan or have been waiting to check out foodie fave Buttermilk Channel, now may be the perfect time for a visit. Owner Doug Crowell is offering a special, three-course dinner menu on Monday nights for just $25 (in addition to its regular menu), including buttermilk fried chicken with cheddar waffles and bacon wrapped brook trout.
It’s no secret that Frank Bruni’s favorable review in the NY Times has made this restaurant a destination for Manhattanites as well as a regular for Bococa residents, so you might want to consider coming in early for a family dinner without the wait.
Crowell tells me that he considers his hot spot a “very kid-friendly” venue. “My wife and I have a 6 year old. We have a nice kids menu and offer crayons and little cow tattoos that kids love. We have many high chairs that get a lot of use for early dinners and brunch,” he says. For more info, check out all the menus at http://www.buttermilkchannelnyc.com/.
